I wrote the article for Bill White's RSG page that this was taken from, and I saw the inscription in the back of the original photo.
I can't add anything else to fuel speculation, other than that because the steam dome lid is still laying on the ground and that everything else except the dome cover has been cleared from the area, that the engine had been sitting there for a while, and may have been waiting to have the boiler salvaged. When I saw C&S engines being scrapped in Denver, the boilers were cut up immediately, right there. The hulk we see in the picture may have been pushed into that location for salvage. The boiler, after all may have been thought to be worth more than scrap.
So maybe #76's boiler survived for at least a time after the rest of it was scrapped. If these engines were still in existence, we'd know about it. Someone on this list would have pictures of them.
