Well guys after reading those two comments about ultra-quickie visits, I feel blessed that we actually went to NG land on our family vacations with the intent on SEEING STEAM ACTION, or at least hopeful of doing so.
We had a theory, and it was that one should spend as much time chasing down good steam while it was there to be had. This never applied more than when we went to NG country in the 60's, and overseas in the 70's.
In Europe we always figured we could go back some day to take in Paris, and other tourist traps. They would be there, while the steam would not.
484 was the only operating freight engine we saw in 1966, and as mentioned before we chased it on a 2-car water train from Durango to Gato. Perhaps our run was before you saw it in the house at Alamosa.
Here is my shot again at Gato, before we headed off to Ohio.
