I don't believe that the Camel hardware was original with these cars as built. There are two styles of hardware on these cars, but I believe that the Camel hardware was an add-on during the 1924 "rebuilding".
I put that word in quotes since the rebuilding really amounted to striping the cars down into piles of wood and metal, tossing the worn-out wood, and rebuilding new cars with some of the original hardware. I've heard that there are cars whose roofs are made out of the original sheething (and the original lettering is still legible on the inside). Some cars got the reinforced door, others retained their original doors, but all got redone door hardware (what was on the original cars is difficult to figure out, since the original upper door hardware is hidden behind a large board.)
There's a nice write-up on the rebuilding of these cars in the RRobb book on Boxcars (Vol. III) on pg. 93, along with a fairly decent drawing of the modern cars on the facing page.
