Looking at Employee's Timetables from 1923, 1933 and 1948 the car capacities at Ames are listed as 5, 15 and 2 respectively. I believe the five car spur was the original and those two spurs you show were built to assist in the repair of the Ames slide and gradually disappeared over the years.
