Now I got everyone attention, note these unhappy guys. "Derailments: December 25, 1892: Near Marshall Pass, The Pay Train was derailed by spreading of rails. The engineer and fireman were badly injured" (Railroad Gazette 1/20/1893)
With my railroad management experience I read between the lines. They would not let that kind of cause go out if they were not hiding something else. Most likely the engine crew was racing way over speed to please the officials on the way home. Most of the Pay Trains, that I learned of, went around the whole circle with the best or newest of passenger power which stayed with the train. Usually went clockwise and so this train was returning from RGS, Ridgway to Salida on last of many days on the road. Poor roadforeman! PRR
