One of my many "knuckle biting" experiences involved the passenger train that followed the '91 rotary trip getting hung up in the ice below Windy point. I had 487 - with the outfit train - back down to help 488 up the hill. In addition to fearing the 0503 (on the rear) would derail on ice while backing down to the stranded train, I was worried that 487 would yank 0503 in two trying to get started. Luckily, I had Charlie Shawcroft running the 487, and we shuffled up there with no incident.
I've heard several stories of drawbars getting yanked out trying to get out of the snow. I guess the 490's were known for that when they had wood end sills and wood pilot beams.
