OK, perhaps more than a few year. Eleven to be more precise. In the fall of 2009, my son got a kitchen pass and joined me for a Friends #315 charter running from Antonito to Chama. This was a bit of a strange beast, as we didn't leave Antonito until late morning, arriving at Big Horn wye/siding for a meet with the Chama to Antonito train already returning to Antonito. It was already 2:15 when the meet finally occurred. While waiting, we did a crew shot while backed into the wye:
As a consequence of our late departure from Bighorn - and several more stops for runbys - we didn't arrive at Rock Tunnel until the sun was close to going behind the mountains. THIS was the Rock Tunnel shot I'd waited years to get, after many mediocre attempts. Low, warm late autumn light in perfect conditions. The rock almost glowed gold in the waning light.
By the time we got to Osier the sun had slipped below the hills to the west and it was pitch black by the time we reached Cumbres. The run down the pass to Chama was magic in the moonlight with the headlight panning back and forth in the night. My son and I had the back caboose to ourselves and still talk about that incredible ride in the darkness. A truly great father/son trip.
