Last fall at a train show, I ran across a gem of a book on Colorado railroading. This book, Goin' Railroading, by Margaret Coel, is fascinating and very well written view into the early narrow gauge operations in and around Como in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Her grandfather spent much of his career as an Engineer on the Colorado & Southern. Her father then followed in her grandfather's footsteps as an Engineer on the Front Range up into the early diesel era. The book is based on stories from them. Ms. Coel paints a vivid portrait of the dangers and difficulties of the early narrow gauge operations, but also about life in Como back then. I must say learned a great deal about railroading in general from this book.
From what I can tell the author lives in Colorado. She might be a fascinating speaker at a future Narrow Gauge Convention or some event.
Publisher is Pruett and was first copy righted in 1991. Amazon had a few copies available as of a few weeks ago.
