In doing research for the D&RGW/RGS snow fighting books, I have also researched the Silverton short lines and will include them in the books. They tried running as much in winter as possible with engines with wedge plow pilots and two flangers. They even purchased a steam ditcher which they later sold to the D&RGW (Ditcher OW). After they sold it, they borrowed the RGS Ditcher 030 a few times, but it was just too costly to operate for the amount of traffic.
The mines tried to produce as much as they could when the lines open and stored the ore or shipped it to the smelters who stored it. Problem was the ore did not store well out in the elements.
