That could have been the Illini Special. It was run in June: steam all the way from Chicago to Silverton (except Denver-Alamosa). Back then the Silverton season didn't start until mid-June.
I once had a book published by the Illini Railroad Club about one such excursion. I can't remember if it was the 1958 or 1959 trip. The 476 pulled the train from Alamosa and then to Silverton. The 487 was the power coming back with the 498 helping from Chama to Cumbres.
