I will talking with the gf last night about the trip in May (I guess I am a bit excited) and she finally started at ask questions about it. Since the 844 was in town last weekend and was again this morning, she asked what the difference was between the DRGW NG and the 844... This ended up on how steep Cumbres was and she asked if there was every any run aways down Cumbres...
Stumped me on the spot
I told her I am sure there was but couldn't think of any stories off the top of my head. But that got me seaching the internet as well as this site and I haven't found any information about any run aways on any of the DRGW NG system (Cumbres in particular). I recall one story of the early days of the C&TS, on old DRGW engineer was ridding and felt the train was a little fast doing down windy point so he scrambled over the tender and helped the crew get a hold of her but other than that, it seems like Cumbres hasn't had many runaways...
So does anyone know of any?
