I attempted to drive up to Alpine in 2007 in mid June. The road was open but conditions were not posted. Ran around 2 large rocks in the middle of the row before the first tank. Turned at Sherrod Loop and ran almost to the Palisades and ran into a slide blocking the road. Had to back down into the woods to make a turn around. Navigated the first rock but managed to turn into the second as I pulled out on the edge of the road to pass it on my right. $2600 damage to the rental car. You really need a jump seat observer that time of year. Better after July 4th and usually open in September. They don't seem to maintain it as well as in years past. Can be a gut buster in spots. My first trip was in late September 1978 in a snow storm.
