In May the road up the west side should be open around the last curve below the palisades. There is usually a large drift blocking the way where the old Hancock pass road joins the roadbed, still before the palisades. Leave your vehicle there and hike in, less than a 1/2 mile to the station/engine house remains. (someone correct me on this if I've got the distance wrong) In the past years, the Forest Service has had a volunteer there to answer questions. I don't know what time of year he gets there. It's worth the trip, some track has been relaid with a switch stand and a small exhibit in the station. It's probably a 1/4 mile further to the west portal, but should be easily passable on foot.
Check in Pitkin to see about conditions.
