A lot of the comparisons depend upon what you plan to do with the pictures ... I end up taking lots of pictures that I don't keep, so a digital camera would save all of that waste. On the other hand, having recently purchased a Nikon slide scanner, I can tell you from personal experience that you need to get up to at least 6 megapixels to get as much detail out of the digital camera as you get shooting with standard slide film - with 4x6 pixs you will never notice that difference, but I sometimes enlarge a photo (by moving slide screen back or by enlarging via Photo program on computer) in an attempt to figure out something that I hadn't noticed at the time. For example, I have a very old (July 3, 1971) picture of CATS train leaving the Narrows taken from the hiway (so most of train fits on slide); I was able to enlarge the picture enough to read "484" on the locomotive. I kind of doubt that you could get that off the standard digital picture ... but you may not care either.
