Gavin, I remember seeing a lot of Brits in Germany during my first trip there in 1972, and they were groaning about the recent loss of steam in the UK. We lost our mainline Standard gauge stuff here really around 1958, although some pockets lasted until 1960, but aside from things like the Colorado and Southern and a few shortlines it was gone 10 years before Britain. The fact the D&RGW made it until 1968 was a miracle really, and one I glad to have gotten to see one more time that year. After that I started heading for foreign lands where steam still roamed for a few more years. But alas its all gone now!!!
