How do they locate the tracks in Como?

Question, as you guys re-establish the trackage, how do you locate it to where it was 80 years ago? Are you able to dig down and find survey markers, old ties, footings, etc that tell you where to restore the tracks? Do you do it per the historical drawings, surveys, etc? I'm just fascinated by all the progress, just curious how you know where to re-eastablish the grade, dig to lay track, eventually re-create structures, etc? Amazing work to say the least....
