Wiki is very good in terms of history articles. It's perfect to get a broad, general summarization of a certain era or event. As mentioned, it's only when it comes to current politics and politicians that one should start taking trains of salt along with their research.

On a sidenote, might I recommend Panzerkrieg by Peter McCarthy? tongue sticking out smiley
