I hate to tell you this, but those are not real rails. I mean, they don't connect to anything, except the outside two. The rest are just for the grade crossing - they wear better and are cheaper than any other surface material.

In other words, only two of them ever connected to anything outside the grade crossing. You can tell, because the rails aren't even parallel. And there are seven rails; can't be an odd number.
