The White Pass email group had a posting by Boerries Burkhardt who established the list. He says the offical word from the White Pass PR person is that the 40 is being returned because it is not needed:
"The decision to send No. 40 back -- shortening the 5-year lease was a difficult but necessary one. Due to the cancellation of the Carcross steam service in 2001 and with no plans to implement any new steam excursions or special double-header trains in the near future, it became more and more apparent that a second steam engine was not needed.
"The pride of the company’s fleet, steam engine No. 73 is undergoing a complete rebuild and will be ready for service beginning June 2002."
According to the White Pass website the steam engine will pull the trips to Bennett on Saturdays in July and August. In June these trips will be pulled by a diesel.
The offical WP&YR site still lists both #73 and #40 on its roster pages.
