The trains were numbers 215 and 216 then. The conductors were Stamey Edmisten westbound and D.H. (Henry) Hines eastbound. The pair were the senior conductors on the Alamosa Division.
Hines' name showed up many times on posts in this forum. He was the conductor on the Chili Line when 174 ran away on Barranca Hill, killing engineer Johnny Reddington and fireman Jack Fish. He was also the conductor when the 115 collided head on with a light engine at Toltec, killing the crew on the 169, the 115's engine.
Since there was no eastbound the next day Edmisten had to fly back to Alamosa on Frontier Airlines (the original). Edmisten was working freight in the 1940s even though his seniority could have allowed him to hold a passenger job. Earlier he was conductor on the last train out of Pagosa Springs.
Henry Nissen was the engineer over Cumbres with the 488. I believe Jack Dieckman was one of the engineers on the Durango-Chama segment.
Alva Lyons was conductor on the Chama-Dulce version of the San Juan, that ran until May.
