Would the rail bus be equally nimble in reverse or forward? Its ability to run in reverse would determine whether the bus could proceed past big horn wye (although I recall recently that big horn wye had been spiked down to prevent its use as a wye).
If if is unidirectional, then either by itself or in tandem with one coach, I doubt you could lose money on weekend operations. Even at forty paying passenges, with one bus running to Taos, and speeder crew leading the way, it would make money. The per diem pay for the crew, weekend personnel at the Antonito depot would be recovered by 12 full price fares. E.g. $1,440 (12x120) would pay for 8 people at $120 per diem with over $400 for bus operation, and fuel charge. Charge $140 per person at Taos and give $20 to the ticket seller. Use the hotels to front the business. No salaries, paychecks, simply a per diem amount. If the RGRPC is nervious about directly operating it, then use an umbrella group do it. Some people from Alamosa on a volunteer basis might love to help out. Remember it is weekends only, no need for all the overhead seen in the summer operation. Finally, for safety the pineapple would be available with one coach for rescue operations.
Speaking of Alamose, the group raising $$ for 169 might be interested in helping if they could get a cut of the money. If they ever get their coach repaired and the railbus can move it, they could put together quite a little train.
