I would think that to be real tin...
I pulled up the youtube video of the car from OERM...I noticed the headliners above the bulkhead...solid...like you mentioned in your post. That defeats the bullnose design...ventilation from the the underside of the platform roof. I'd guess that originally it had turned wood, much like table legs or a banister...or a porous brass screen. I enjoy looking at those sorts of changes...ventilation changes...which railroads performed during the 1880-1900 period. I'm looking forward to getting out to LA and seeing the car in person...it is definitely among my top 5 favorite surviving passenger cars.
