Here is another non-Colorado artifact. While I was not the first to see this artifact, I was the first to identify it. A stock watering tank on the site of an old logging camp had a two grab irons attached, but did not look like a locomotive tank. It was square, and the bottom angled up toward one side (end?). The tank was sunk into the ground and partly full of dirt and debris, so the exact shape of the bottom could not be determined. The top was open, though torch marks showed that part of it had been cut away. Much later, while peruesing "The Heisler Locomotive" book I noticed that an early 25 ton Heisler had what appeared to be a sloping front on the water tank. Another photo showed grab irons in the same place as the tank in question if it were inverted. On a lazy afternoon I took several other SV railroaders to the site to get their opnion. I was some distance behind them and they stopped to wait at a turnout about a mile from the site. When I had caught up they had recovered a large piece of sheet steel with a couple of companion flanges attached. I suspected this was the cut off piece of the tank. We measured it, and when we reached the tank site the measurements fit perfictly. Partial excavation revieled where the water hatch had been welded over. It was indeed the upside down tank from a small Heisler. The Stoddard Lumber Co. had a 25 ton Heisler (CN 1023, road no. 2) known as "Old Brigham". This locomotive was listed as "scrapped" but it's exact disposition is not known. We do not have an explaination for the bottom being a mile or more away from the rest of the tank.
Also at the old camp site are the remains of three camp cars and some out buildings. Two of the cars were burned and all that remains are the truss rods and parts of the bolsters. It looks like they were removed from their trucks before being put in place. The third camp car was a shower car and, though missing trucks and draft gear, was more or less intact in the early 1970's. Unfortunately snow had collapsed it the winter before I first saw it. Enough remains to identify its use however. This car was lettered for the Baker White Pine Lumber Co., but was probibly acquired by the Stoddards when they took over the other BWP properties.
