In Josie Moore Crum's book on the Rio Grande Southern she recounts a saw-by that her husband, conductor John Harvey Crum, did. Two freight trains had to pass at Millwood. To complicate things a passenger train had to run around one freight and meet the second freight. To further complicate things there were cars stored on the siding.
The feat was accomplished in 11 moves on curving track at night with only lantern signals. It would be worth checking out the book just for that.
