From viewing a TV program on History of Albuquerque, I gather that much the same as mentioned above happened here. The Santa Fe RR was going to develop a train shop (service center) at Bernarillo [north of ABQ] but the local real estate developer wanted to hold them up on the price for the land. The SFRR decided to go on to Albuquerque and build their shops there. The locals in ABQ naturally thot that the SF would come by "Old Town" Albuquerque and anticipated a land rush for land in the area. The SFRR decided to locate their shops and depot some 5 or so miles east of "Old Town", on less expensive land. The SFRR built an extensive locomotive repair facility near downtown ABQ which survived until after WWII and the end of "steamers". The BNSF sold the old shops (26 acres) in downtown ABQ a fews years back. It is now ready for redevelopment by someone.
