In my 31 years at the RR I was heavily involved in the safety program. One primary lesson I
learned is that safety is a mind set. A safety minded individual will evaluate the hazards and
do everything possible to eliminate them.If they
can't be fixed he shuts everything down.
On the other hand there is the individual that is sure that nothing will happen to him and will
take chances in repairs and in maintenance that
sooner or later catch up with him.
From what I have read of the inadequate repairs
made to the tractor and of the distractions that
took place, this was a predictable accident.
The problem is that it will be sure to bring more
legislation intended to " make sure nothing like
this happens again".
