Yesterday I looked at the White Pass website and went over to the liked website of the parent Tri-White Corporation. I read the press releases posted at that site these included some quarterly reports.
It seems that the White Pass may now be the only cash center for Tri-White. And the company acknowledges that its core business is Tourism. Last year they sold its trucking operation (Tri-Line Expressways); it did take a receivable note for part of the sale. Tri-White appears to have invested substanically in stock of two other compaies; but I don't know anything about these companies.
Tri-White through the White Pass also owns and operates the wharfs at Skagway. The only one it does not operate is the one used by the Alaskan ferries. Its wharfs are the ones used by the cruise boats and any other commercial business in Skagway. To quote the White Pass website, "Skagway is unique in the fact that it is one of the few ports in the state which is primarily owned and operated by a private company. That private company is the Pacific and Arctic Railway and Navigation Company dba White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad. The White Pass Railroad has a 55-year lease with the City of Skagway which encompasses the majority of tideland real estate in the Skagway valley." In 1999 summer season 521,000 cruise ship passengers arrived in Skagway.
It is interesting that the last finanical statement posted on its website is from this May when it reported through March 31, 2000. This was a quarterly and nine-month report. It showed that 2000 was better than 1999 and said that the company was investing in the White Pass infrastructure.
The cruise ship business is tourism and most people fly to ride the ships. We have a soft economy and now people fearful of flying. We are going to have to watch and see what happens.
