I heard this story from Dan Ranger about his early firing days on the SP. He was assigned to an old cab forward out of Oakland and he couldn't get her to steam. Two days later, with the same engine, same run, similar consist but a different engineer she steamed like a champ.
He asked the roundhouse foreman what they had done to the engine. "Nothing",replied the Foreman, "Now what does that tell you."
