There was generally an Acetylene Genereator mounted on the fireman's side just ahead of the cab, which in photographs is usually mistaken for a small airpump.
A gas delivery line ran from the top of the generator, under the jacketing, and out to the headlamp. If you don't know to look for the Acetylene Genereator the gas line is usually mistaken to be an electrical line.
I'm not sure of the dates, but I know both standard gauge and narrow gauge engines were fitted with these in the 1895-1915 time period, and possibly earlier/later.
