Pure weight, and the pedestal binders (bars bolted underneath the driving boxes which bridge the gap between the pedestals, aka the vertical frame members beside the driving boxes). Seen in place here on the frame of Baldwin 60,000 with no obstructions. The shoes and wedges would then hold the boxes in place laterally against the pedestal faces. Hope this helps.
