REAL intermodal foolishness

The above was all in good fun, but here's a just-as-foolish intermodal scenario that really took place for a while where I used to work...
Lumber came into Montreal on a flatcar, where it was transferred to a large Canadian truck that was too big to travel US roads. The Canadian truck brought it to the border where the lumber was again transferred onto an American flatbed and brought to St. Albans. There, the trailers and loads were put aboard a piggyback flat for rail shipment to Palmer, Mass.. At Palmer, the lumber was removed from the flatbed-atop-railcar with a forklift and the empty trailer and car were returned to St. Albans. This went on for some time until our managers noted that it wasn't economic. Thereafter, the lumber stayed on the flatcar between Montreal and Palmer.
