Early on they did. Later on, that wasn't possible. Regular service through Alpine Tunnel ceased in 1910...so not further access to Gunnison was available via the CSng. I believe that the Buena Vista-Leadville was dual gauged circa 1890 as part of the Tennessee Pass line. If I was to guess...I'd guess that the ng rail to Leadville was long gone before the D&RG received the new "W". I'm sure someone knowledgeable of the Rio Grande can chime in with the dates.
