In Colorado in the early days, it was much more common that the photographs tell.

The Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden has many interchange sheets showing foreign line cars, D&RG, DL&G/C&S, RGS (when they were ok to interchange) and others in Interchange and in train consists. These happened where the railroads met in places like Leadville, Buena Vista and Gunnison.

Photos, while great for the eyes, don't always tell the full story.
