I really like the comments about how the engines compared to one another...especially the comment about a K-28 being more powerful than a K-36. It is entirely consistent with everything I've ever heard about Baldwin and Alco...Baldwin was Geo, Alco was Chevy, Lima was Cadillac.
Another example I'm aware of...the SG AlCO 2-8-4s had a higher rated TE than the Lima built 2-8-4s, but I've heard that in practice, the Lima version was clearly the superior of the two in the view of one of the few engineers to have run both...
It is a shame that no one is left who could comment on Brooks 2-6-0s vs. Baldwin 2-6-0s vs. Cooke 2-6-0s. I'm glad the Rio Grande lasted long enough for such an incredible quantity of information (and pictures!) to have been preserved. There are probably 2x-3x as many photos of each K-36 by Otto Perry than there are total photos of my beloved DSP&P from before 1900.
