I believe the issue was that the original boxes are worn out, with holes having been "worked" larger and off center from decades of use. The contractor who built the new box fabrications copied the original boxes exactly, in their worn out state, rather than what their like-new state would have been. So, they are brand-new worn-out journal boxes.
