Correct Jessica.

Slag is what you end up with after the flux and impurities have been drawn off and cooled. The stuff ends up looking a little like obsidian. A lot of CF&I's slag found its way back out on the D&RGW lines as "ballast", a sort of closing the circle type of recycling that is frowned upon now. A lot of slag ended up on the lines around Alamosa.
