The last train of all on the MT ran on 20 Feb 1949. #59 made a caboose hop from the former CM yards in Colorado City to Cripple Creek that morning. The District switcher, #60, was road engine on the last train from Cripple Creek and down Ute Pass on the former CM to the Springs that afternoon, with #59 cut in ahead of the caboose.
My mother took me over to see that last train come in. I was only six years old at the time, but I'll never forget seeing that train come in, nor will I forget the sad feeling that permeated the whole afternoon.
Everett Rhoher of KVOR radio in Colorado Springs made a recording of that trip on a wire recorder. Quality isn't the best, but at least it exists.
