the true diamond stack was invented by George Griggs in 1856 for use on coal burning locomotives. generally speaking the true diamond stack was used on early coal burners. Wood burners more often wore the funnel shaped Radley Hunter, & Dolly Varden stacks, and later on the Sunflower stack.
straight stacks are associated with the introduction of the extended smokebox. The extended smokebox allowed room for internal spark arrestors, although some road especially in logging areas continued to wear external spark arrestors as well.
