I too had never seen the Sports Models without the funky stacks before the Grande sold the Silverton. (dob 6/5/61). What always got me about them was not only how wildly out of place they were on an engine from the '20s, but that they didn't really look like any "real" Diamond stack *I've* ever seen a picture of. They were too small and not far enough up the stack, for starters.
btw, several people in this thread have stated that Diamonds were for wood-burners and not coal. Just to be contrary, I'd like to point out that, with a very few exceptions (some of the class 47s & 42 1/2 are all I can think of) all D&RG 3' gauge engines delivered before 1903 came with Diamond stacks and they all burned coal from the start.
