Just something interesting to add to what Glenn said in his intial response....
The Billerica and Bedford Railroad's first two locomotives, the Aerial and the Puck, the first two two foot gauge locomotives on the continent, were initially constructed by Hinkley as cab forward 4-4-0Ts. I bet all of you out there are thinking, hey, that is a forney backwards. You're exactly right. Irregardless, running them tender first I would guess must have caused adhesion problems that the Sandy River didn't want to deal with because before the engines were sent to Maine they were "turned around" and fitted with sand domes. There may be other reasons why they would do this but that is my best guess.
As far as I know, these were the world's first cab forward steam locomotives, being constructed by Hinkley in 1877.
