There has been a lot of fuss about the paint on 489.
In all honesty, I do not see what the fuss is about and yet some have stomped off and left the NGDF.
From my point of view only, I grew up with the Southern Railway steam program with 750, 722, 630, and 4501. 630 and 750 were black with graphite on the smokebox and firebox, the tender deck and coal bin and cab roof and cab doors primer red. Wheels had white trim, yellow (gold) was the trim on the hand rails, the edge of the running boards, and the edge of the tender frame (I think).
When I researched the Gainesville Midland for restoring GM 2-10-0 #209, this was the way it ran in the late 1950's hauling freight. So Did Chattahoochee Valley 2-8-0 #21.
I guess it all depends on your experiences. I just can not understand all the fuss.
Sorry about that. (Is this much ado about nothing?)
