I helped install the tender generator on the shay in what have been the mid to late 1990s. The original generator, located just in front of the cab wall, was still used but only for engine lighting. As Billy mentioned, we had some very long days running the Christmas Express where over a period of four weekends we would carry more than 6,000 people. This meant we ran long after dark and needed coach and caboose lights. The few lights that the single original generator could provide just was not enough. We tried a gas generator but it was noisy for the engine crew.
The SS&S #26 also had a second generator added back on the tender but I suspect its less visible, assuming its still on it at all today. No steam has run at Pine Creek since January 1, 2002.
Both engines also had a pipe at the rear for steam heat in the Newfoundland Rwys Coach. The caboose used a coal stove.
Billy, good to hear from you. If you have a chance, send me an email at

BTW, Billy was an ace fireman even at 14 years old or so firing for me on the Shay, Lady Edith, and the #26. Gads that was a long time ago.
As to the Quincy #6, it should be leaving Pine Creek and heading for home back on Quincy Hill. Now looking at a move this fall.
