Silverton Northern Engine House
I have just returned from my annual trip to Railfest and Silverton.
While in Silverton I went over to the Silverton Northern Engine House
where several men were removing all the equipment that has been
stored in the engine house for many many years. I was talking to
Jerry ? and he said that the engine house will be restored and track
laid in order to store the D&RGW No 315. Track will be in place,
tied into the D&SNG RR line, with the engine inside by the end of
October. They, the Durango Historical Society, have applied for a
grant to restore the SNEH with one bay for the NO. 315 and the other
for restoration of the many pieces of rolling stock outside the
building. Hearing the news kind of gives me goose bumps, knowing
that a building this historic is going to be brought back to life.
So far, nothing has been done to the Silverton Northern Caboose or the
Silverton Baggage Car No. 5. The caboose is still in Durango behind
the round house on a flat car and the baggage car still sits next to
the SNEH in Silverton.
I have taken a number of photos of the inside and am going to offer a
photo CD with profits going to the San Juan County Historical Soceity
for restoration of the caboose and the baggage car. More
information on that in the near future.

Re: Silverton Northern Engine House
From what I was told, the Casey Jones will not be stored in the
SNEH. I believe that they plan to store it up close to the museum.
Where, I'm not sure, as there isn't any structure, currently, that
they could place it in.
Initially, plans are to only lay track into the left bay, although
both bays are being cleaned out and the intent is to have both bays
with track. They will not be laying stub switches, only point
switches.
