Curtis,
As you probably know, Baldwin advertised the top speed of an 8-18C at 40 mph. Some years ago I took Eureka down to the US Gypsum railroad out of El Centro and did test runs there. They have 100 pound rail and I was able to get Eureka up to about 39 mph. The locomotive ran very smoothly, but the limiting factor as I found it was the tender. The water is not baffled in the tank, and it sets up so much side sway that it literally pitched some wood over the side! That was enough for me. I have never had it that fast since, and have no desire to do so again......Baldwin was right on their calculations.
If someone got a ng 4-4-0 going 50 mph on 35 or 40 pound rail,I bet they had to change their underwear afterwards!
