I have done some Operation Lifesaver presentations but we can't reach everyone.
We had a situation like that (joggers with iPods) on the Santa Fe in the Corona, CA, area a few years ago. Killed one and injured the other. It was a charter train to a race at the new California Speedway and, of course, the survivor blamed it on the train and the racetrack, even though the engineer was on the horn for minutes.
I have to agree with Will, although the muffling of the locomotives that has occurred in the last 10 or 20 years must be contributing to it too. Trains are really quiet now unless they have some flat wheels.
