John makes a good point. Things are fine as long as things go as expected. It's the unexpected that gets you.....
My parents drilled a deep respect for traffic, either on a road or on the tracks. We were never even allowed to play on the street in front of our house, even though it was a lightly traveled street in a small KS town.
I still get an uneasy feeling when I cross RR tracks, even when I can see there is no train a mile in either direction. You won't catch me standing, walking, or running on the tracks! I had a friend who worked in a warehouse district who described loose/broken metal straps on flatcar loads that could have sliced a person in half even if they were standing a few feet away from the tracks. I think it is better to be safe than sorry, maimed, or dead......
It's when you lose your respect for trains or any heavy equipment that bad things happen.
