Just like English, Spanish seems to have its colonial variations. I am not fluent in Spanish, but used to travel extensively in Latin American and knew just enough Spanish to notice some differences. Given the history of NM, a similarity to Castillano does not surprise me. Probably for similar reasons, the most classic Castillano I heard in South America was in Ecuador. The most notorious variation is probably the Cubans, who are alledged to speak machine gun Spanish. In my experience the most interesting variation is with the Argentines, who are mostly of Italian immigrant origin and have made almost a different language out of it. You will notice that most of my experience with Spanish has something to do with chasing steam engines!
