Add the town of Coalinga to the confusion. Most Californians probably think it is a Spanish word, and pronounce it '
CO-ah-LEEN-gah' (more or less), but actually it was originally
Coaling Station "
A" on an S.P. branch, and should be pronounced KOHL-ing--
AY ("AY" as in "HAY".)
This is according to a story I read on the back of the menu in an old downtown Coalinga restaurant many years ago, since destroyed by an earthquake in the mid-80's.
The cafe featured both American & Mexican food, the latter including TAY-cohs, RELLIN-ohs & en-CHILLY-dahs.
(But they weren't as good as Vera's.)
