No offense to Roger and everyone else in Chama, but what really would be amazing would be a Railfest in the San Luis Valley.
Imagine a joint C&TS/SL&RG Railfest in 2020. I say 2020 because I think that will be both the 50th anniversary of the C&TS and the 15th anniversary of when Permian Basin Railways purchased the San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad.
Imagine the possibilities if this were a one-time event and that outside locomotives and trainsets were brought in. I'm envisioning something like what the California RR Museum has done with its big anniversary celebrations. While it would be amazing to see RGS 20, D&RGW 346 & 315, E&P #4, etc., on the C&TS, imagine also being able to bring in outside standard gauge steamers. Perhaps UP could be convinced to run 844 over La Veta; after all, they did once run 3985 over the CSX.
Think of the possibilities -- Milwaukee 261 and/or Espee #4449 in Antonito, next to hot K36s and a K27. How about 1744 and 4449 doubleheading? Maybe 4449 could first swing south in California and bring 2467 east with her? Maybe some east coast steam could come west -- imagine NKP 765, PM 1225 and/or C&O 614 running on the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad.
One problem with this is that there probably isn't enough hotel and campground space in the valley to support all the people who would come to see it.... but holding it in 2020 gives plenty of time to build more campgrounds and hotels.
