I let a lot of people influence me at a young and impressionable age. As a result, while I've been to Chama many times up until last summer I had never been to Durango (I had a job interview up in Grand Jct. which came in a day after we went up to Chama, and we passed through both coming and going)(you DON'T want to know my wife's reaction to coming down Red Mtn. Pass (hint: She's from Minnesota...) I think her knuckles have finally cleared up
(I passed on the job...). I found Durango to be professional, well run, and very touristy. I could live with that... While I love Chama and the C&TS, I can enjoy the D&SNG. Two different takes on the narrow gauge experience, and each has a place. Sure, Durango has changed over the years, but that's life. You can't expect a town the size of Durango to NOT change. So yes, the Californians have priced it out of reach to us mere mortals. But Chama has changed a bit as well, and I for one am glad the outhouses there are no longer located right next to the water wells...
